Brighton Ultimate’s first round of Summer Hat League kicked off (threw off?) this Monday in Wild Park. The schedule sees our three teams match up twice over the course of the three week league.

This week, 2 games for Churchill Squares both ended, tragically, in 7-8 sudden death defeats. The first game versus Wild Park Wanderers was a gritty battle, with multiple lead changes, before the inevitable sudden death finisher. Wagner and Danny’s one-on-one battle was a real highlight of this game, as were the displays of some of our younger players’ skills, with Marketa’s excellent cutting and Connor’s spectacular grabs in the endzone.

The warm up game for Squares saw them start strong against Kemptown Massive – jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The tables soon turned however, with Kemptown rolling off 6 straight points to take the lead, with some big blocks by Fetu, and precision assists from Jonny to that well-known recevier, Hannah Brew. Some visionary throws from Mikey helped Squares stop the slide, but in the end the surge of Kemptown proved too much, and they fended off the late Squares comeback to close out the win.

Big thanks to Rich & John for the meticulously measured pitch.

Next week: Wild Park Wanderers face Kemptown Massive in the top-of-the-table clash – with games so close this week, every point counts!

Interested in playing? Sign-ups are now closed for this round of league, but we’ll be running at least one further round. We’ll announce it on the website soon! When league isn’t running, we have club trainings on Mondays, in Wild Park, 6.45pm to 8.30pm – these trainings are open to all, and we aim to cater to our wide range of playing abilities in our club and city, from total beginners to our international players.

If you’re a beginner, your first three BU sessions don’t require membership (UKU or Brighton), but after that, we ask everyone who attends to have these for insurance purposes. If you’re an experienced player, you’ll need UKU membership and Brighton membership to attend trainings.

If you’re interested, but not sure about coming down, why not drop us an email at [email protected]?

BU is excited to announce that sign ups are now open for our first round of Summer Hat league! Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a veteran or a complete beginner.

Hat format, 5-a-side

Mixed & Open divisions

Mondays, 7pm – 8.40pm

12th June – 3rd July

1 x 30 minute game each week, minimum

Wild Park, off Lewes Road

£8 player fee

The league will run on Mondays for 4 weeks (12th June – 3rd July), and each week, you’ll get a minimum of 1 x 30 minute game, played between 7pm and 8.40pm, at Wild Park, off Lewes Road (map link at the bottom of this post!).

A hat league means we draw the teams randomly (but with a spread of experience across every team) – this means you’ll get to meet (and compete against!) a variety of people from across the Brighton Ultimate community. We’re aiming to run 2 divisions in our first round of summer hat league this year: mixed and open. In the mixed division, each team will field 2 or 3 women for each point (as per WFDF 2017 rules); in the open division, there are no gender restrictions.

For each division, there will be:
– winners medals
– a prize for the most spirited team
– League MVP prizes (as voted by the teams)

Sign up now!

The player fee will be £8 for each division you want to play in (you can sign up for both, if you like). We’ll ask you to pay this fee after you complete the sign up form.

For insurance reasons, you will need Brighton Ultimate membership (£10/£5) and UK Ultimate membership (basic: £5) to play in the league. These memberships will cover you for subsequent leagues and trainings as well, until the end of September. If you’re coming to club trainings on Mondays, training with one of the teams on Wednesday or Thursday, or playing at tour, you should have these already!

Entry deadline: Saturday 10th June, 5pm.
Payment deadline (incl. BU & UKU membership): Sunday 11th June, 5pm.

You can get BU membership via the website here.

You can get UKU membership via the UKU site here.

Any questions? Email Megan at [email protected]!

Are you a complete beginner? Why not head down to our Monday night session at Wild Park on June 5th, 6.45pm – 8.30pm, to get an introduction to the game – we’ll have a dedicated beginners coach at this training, ready to get you started! We’ll also have one of our coaches running a short taster session on Monday 12th June, 6.30pm to 7.15pm (before the first game), to introduce the basics for any beginners in the league, and your new teammates will also be happy to help!

The agenda for the committee meeting on the 6th December is now available to view. The agenda is still being updated, but should be finalised by December 5th, 6pm.

The committee apologises for the later-than-intended publication of this agenda – this is due to a number of our members having busy schedules and the difficulty of finding space in December to meet, with an unexpected opportunity emerging at short notice (ie. less than one week).

Click here to access the December 6th Agenda.

If you have any comments relating to items being discussed, or any issues you would like to raise at the committee meeting, please contact Nicole Cozens (communications), at communications at brightonultimate dot co dot uk, by Tuesday 6th December, 12pm.

Best wishes,

the BU committee

At the AGM in October, members voted through a change in constitution, relating to Section 9, which deals with the structure of the committee. This change streamlined the committee, in accordance with the proposal voted on at the AGM (available to view here), to the following six positions:

  • President
  • Director of Communications (vice-president)
  • Director of Finance
  • Director of Operations
  • Director of Development
  • Director of Performance

The new committee has redrafted the constitution (specifically Section 9) to reflect the outcome of this vote by the members, with the key adjustment of incorporating our Safeguarding Officer into the constitution, and protecting their oversight role and independence.

The updated constitution can be viewed here. The relevant amendments are in dark red text, in Section 9. The rest of the constitution remains unchanged.

This amendment to the Safeguarding Officer’s role is to ensure that our safeguarding procedures remain strong within our club, and was developed in conjunction with UK Ultimate (our national governing body) to ensure we meet their recommended practices around safeguarding, while still implementing the structural change voted on at the AGM.

The committee believes this redraft of the constitution to best represent the proposal voted on by members at the AGM, but invites any members with concerns regarding the incorporation of our safeguarding provision to raise these by emailing the Director of Communications (Nicole Cozens) at nicolecozens1108 at gmail dot com.

If no concerns are raised regarding these amendments, the constitution will be updated by the committee on 20th December 2016.

Following the club AGM, the club has a new committee and committee structure (click here for further details on changes to the constitution voted through at the AGM).

President: Megan Hurst

Communications (VP): Nicole Cozens

Finance: John Maule

Operations: Rachel Clark

Development: Hannah Brew

Performance: Richard Roberts

You can see their smiling faces at the committee page, where you’ll also find links to the committee’s transparency statement, the meeting agendas and minutes.

The new committee is excited to keep working hard to provide more opportunities to play and develop for our members, and to develop ultimate in the Brighton community. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming opportunities for members to input into the future direction of the club and to help with BU projects!
