Sussex Youth is a club for any young people around Sussex and below the age of 20 to play Ultimate frisbee. We will hold training days and enter tournaments around the U.K. It will be a great chance to improve your skills and also meet other young players in the South East. Beginners welcome, first training is on the 12th of January.

The aim is to provide an opportunity for young people that do not have a club in their school or college and want the chance to train and compete with players of a similar age. We also want to support and connect schools which have already started Ultimate.

Sussex Youth will be working closely with Brighton Ultimate and both Sussex and Brighton Universities. If this interests you then fill out the form and we’ll be in touch with how you can get involved. If you are under 18 you need permission from your parent or guardian to fill this out.

End of Year Club Meal

Saturday 10th November (Facebook event) from 7pm.

Come to the Park View pub (downstairs) and celebrate being a part of our wonderful ultimate community. This meal is for everyone somehow involved in the club, no matter what team you play on or if you only attended 1 Monday night or Fun Tuesday- All welcome!  The deadline for having the buffet has gone but you can still order from the normal menu when you arrive.

Children in Need fundraiser!

Monday 12th November at normal BACA practice.

The BBC have contacted us and we are planning a special training on the 12th to be a fundraising event – usual player fees waived, we also suggest you donate at least the same amount to Children in Need!  Footage will be recorded and sent to the BBC for broadcast on 16th Nov.  If it’s good they’ll use it to be played nationally!

Currently taking all ideas from players to make this fun and raise as much money as possible for the charity, get involved by sending your ideas to Joe and turning up with deep pockets on the 12th!

On the night we’ll just be playing games.  Turn up and you’ll be put into semi-random teams (hat draw).

AGM 2018

Tuesday 13th November (Facebook event) at the Walrus Pub at 7pm

The time has come around again for the Annual General Meeting – your chance to chat about the running of the club, and get involved with being a part of the committee of one of the longest running and most forward-thinking frisbee clubs in the country for the coming 2019 season.  More info about the committee and what they do is available here.

There are definitely going to be posts becoming available this year, so if you are keen to give back to the community and run with your own ideas of how things should be done, now is your chance!

See this doc for full descriptions of the roles and responsibilities in the BU Committee.

Want to volunteer?
If you volunteer to run the warm-up or be “League Organiser” on-the-day (putting out cones, collecting names/fees, recording wins, and so on), you’ll be able to play that week free of charge! (or receive a £3 refund if you’ve already paid £10). If you want to volunteer, say so on the sign-up form, or email Felix.

If you are interested in the direction the club is taking, the work the committee is doing, or if you have time, ideas, opinions, a voice you wish to be heard, or if you want to contribute to spreading / growing / developing / elevating frisbee in Brighton, then you should join the new BU Community Forum!

Rising from the ashes of the old BU Committee GoogleGroup, this is an area where we expect to have 10-20 enthusiastic/knowledgeable/keen BU members putting forward opinions, ideas, and generally getting involved in a range of discussions about the club – or just keeping their ears close to the ground and chiming in when they see fit. Agendas for the committee meetings will be constructed here, minutes after the meetings will be posted here open for discussion, and all the Directors should be actively reading and taking part in the group.

If you have an idea but don’t want it to be open to members for discussion for whatever reason, you can always contact the relevant Director directly, or myself or Joe Butler (President).

Sign up to the BU Community Forum now by sending an email to:

The BU Community Forum is an opt-in, open communication channel between the BU committee and BU members. Visit this page to see how it fits into the newly defined communication structure of BU.

Monday saw the last batch of games in this summer’s first round of Summer Hat League. All games had so far gone to sudden death, with exactly the same scoreline (9-8), with Kemptown Massive sneaking just ahead with 2 wins. Looks like our sorting hat knew what it was doing…

Churchill Squares came out hungry in the first match against Wild Park Wanderers, jumping out to an early lead. Notable mentions go to Steph for scoring most of the goals, and to George Imbert for some big blocks on defence. But Wild Park were not to be outdone, and gradually crept their way back into the game – overturning a 3 point lead from when cap went on to bring it to, guess what, 8 all, game to 9. A beautiful lead pass from Arran to George sealed WPW’s fate, and Churchill came out with their first win!

Kemptown Massive went into their first game of finals week knowing it was the decider – a win would put them ahead in the table and give them the trophy. Some big plays from Connor and some good sneaking towards the endzone from Nolan Taylor kept it close, but the critical moment came when the point at 6-5 lasted forever, eventually going Kemptown’s way, for a big offensive hold, and to put the game at 7-5, game to 8. Kemptown earned their block and put in the score – leading to the first non-sudden death win of the tournament!

Playing for pride, Squares came out firing against Kemptown in the final game – with some great handler movement from Anastasia, John Maule and Arran Belden. The game was tight for a while, but Kemptown began to edge away, with some incredible layout saves by Henry and Pat. Kemptown Massive eventually took the game, leaving them the undefeated champions of BUSHL 2017 (round 1).

Kemptown Massive: BUSHL 2017 Winners (minus a few players…).

Congratulations to Hannah Brew, who won League MVP (as voted by the opposing teams each week) and landed herself a shiny Brighton Ultimate disc.

There was an amazing spread of talent across the teams, with Ricky, Wagner, Marketa, Connor, Nastia, Steph, Fetu, Nolan, Vicky and George also racking up MVP nominations from their opposition, and earning themselves a cute little BU badge (collect when you see Megan or Richard next!).

Special mentions also to Danny and Wagner, our newest players in league, who both made some incredible plays over the three weeks!

Spirit across the whole league was fantastic – with high averages for all three teams, and Kemptown Massive and Churchill Squares tied on the top score (only marginally ahead of Wild Park). Spirit prizes for all the individual players on these teams available to collect next Monday!

BUSHL 2017 medal ceremony

Club training will be running on Monday 10th July in Wild Park, from 6.45pm – there’ll be some special adjustments for those feeling a little achey from Tour at the weekend, but for those feeling sprightly, there’ll be more opportunity for WINNING – in a 3v3 mini tournament. It’s gonna be great!

Brighton’s GB Mixed players: Abi, Tom & Hannah.

A warm welcome home to all of our players who were representing Great Britain (and beyond!) at the World Championships of Beach Ultimate (Royan, France) last week!

In the Mixed division, Chun Lee (also on the GB U24 development programme) made history, representing Malaysia at their first ever world championship event, while Abi Cohman, Hannah Brew, and Tom Mannings were part of the GB Mixed squad that took home 7th place – beating a boisterous Italy to make top 8, but losing out to eventual bronze medallists Germany in quarters.

Alize Clough and Nicole Cozens were flying the Brighton flag in the Women’s Masters division, demolishing European rivals to make the top 4, but losing out to a strong Canadian team at semis and a recharged Australia in the 3v4 playoff.

Felix Sharldow represented in the Men’s Masters division, finishing 8th after a brutally close quarter final with Spain.

Megan Hurst was part of the GB Women‘s squad who brought home bronze medals – losing out to the eventual champions, Russia, in the semi-final before demolishing Canada in the 3v4 match.

Ashley Yeo and Hayden Slaughter put in phenomenal showings with the GB Men‘s team, pushing the USA hard in the final for a fantastic game to watch, but eventually bringing home the silver medal.

Ben Rolfe also comes home with some silverware – with GB Grand Masters making the final in style over Finland, but falling to a very strong USA team.

We’re so proud of everyone, and excited to have them back! You can check out the full tournament details and placings here.
