BU Summer Hat League: Week 1 Recap
Brighton Ultimate’s first round of Summer Hat League kicked off (threw off?) this Monday in Wild Park. The schedule sees our three teams match up twice over the course of the three week league.
This week, 2 games for Churchill Squares both ended, tragically, in 7-8 sudden death defeats. The first game versus Wild Park Wanderers was a gritty battle, with multiple lead changes, before the inevitable sudden death finisher. Wagner and Danny’s one-on-one battle was a real highlight of this game, as were the displays of some of our younger players’ skills, with Marketa’s excellent cutting and Connor’s spectacular grabs in the endzone.
The warm up game for Squares saw them start strong against Kemptown Massive – jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The tables soon turned however, with Kemptown rolling off 6 straight points to take the lead, with some big blocks by Fetu, and precision assists from Jonny to that well-known recevier, Hannah Brew. Some visionary throws from Mikey helped Squares stop the slide, but in the end the surge of Kemptown proved too much, and they fended off the late Squares comeback to close out the win.
Big thanks to Rich & John for the meticulously measured pitch.
Next week: Wild Park Wanderers face Kemptown Massive in the top-of-the-table clash – with games so close this week, every point counts!
Interested in playing? Sign-ups are now closed for this round of league, but we’ll be running at least one further round. We’ll announce it on the website soon! When league isn’t running, we have club trainings on Mondays, in Wild Park, 6.45pm to 8.30pm – these trainings are open to all, and we aim to cater to our wide range of playing abilities in our club and city, from total beginners to our international players.
If you’re a beginner, your first three BU sessions don’t require membership (UKU or Brighton), but after that, we ask everyone who attends to have these for insurance purposes. If you’re an experienced player, you’ll need UKU membership and Brighton membership to attend trainings.
If you’re interested, but not sure about coming down, why not drop us an email at [email protected]?
